You can usually cancel dealer-sold gap coverage (the coverage that pays the difference between what you owe on your loan and what your car is worth if it is totaled or stolen) after signing by sending a written request to the gap coverage administrator named on your gap coverage addendum, with a copy to the dealer. Cancel early with no claim and many contracts refund the full price; after that, a prorated share — and the refund typically goes to your lender to lower your loan balance.
Dealer gap coverage vs. insurer gap coverage
Dealer gap coverage is usually a waiver or addendum attached to your loan, run by a gap coverage administrator. It's often rolled into the amount you financed, so you also pay interest on it.
Insurer gap coverage (sometimes called loan/lease payoff coverage) is added to your own auto policy and billed with your premium. Availability varies by insurer, state, and the age of the car — ask your agent.
Do you still need gap coverage?
Gap coverage matters when you owe more than the car is worth — common with little or no money down, a long loan, or negative equity rolled in from a trade. If that's you, line up replacement coverage before you cancel, so you're never uncovered. If your loan balance is already below the car's value, you may not need gap coverage at all.
Who to write
- The gap coverage administrator named on your gap coverage addendum or waiver — they process the refund.
- The dealer's business office — some contracts require the dealer to sign off. Copy them.
- Your lender — if the lender sold the gap coverage (some credit unions do), the lender handles it.
The steps
Find the gap coverage paperwork
It's a separate page or addendum in your deal jacket — look for “gap,” “Guaranteed Asset Protection,” or “Debt Cancellation.” Note the administrator, the contract number, and the cancellation terms.
Get your replacement quote first
If you're underwater, call your auto insurer and ask what gap coverage or loan/lease payoff coverage costs to add. Start it before the dealer gap coverage ends.
Send your request in writing
Use the letter below. Email it if allowed and mail it certified. Copy the dealer.
Ask for the numbers in writing
Request the refund amount, how it was calculated, and the date it's sent to your lender.
Confirm with your lender
About 30 days later, call your lender to confirm the refund arrived and was applied to your balance.

When the refund arrives
Refunds often take several weeks. If you financed, the money usually goes to your lender and lowers your principal — your monthly payment usually doesn't change, but the loan ends sooner. If you've paid the loan off or refinanced, many gap coverage contracts owe you a prorated refund for the unused coverage — ask for it; it's rarely sent automatically.
Nothing after 30 days? Follow up in writing, then use the escalation ladder. Depending on how your state classifies gap coverage, your state insurance department or attorney general may take complaints.

Common questions
Can I cancel gap coverage after I sign?
Usually, yes. Most dealer gap coverage contracts allow cancellation, with a full refund in an initial period if no claim was filed and a prorated refund after. Check your gap coverage addendum's cancellation terms — rules vary by contract and state.
Should I cancel gap coverage if I owe more than the car is worth?
Not without replacement coverage. If you're underwater, get gap coverage or loan/lease payoff coverage from your auto insurer first, then cancel the dealer gap coverage.
Do I get a gap coverage refund if I refinance or pay off the loan?
Often, yes — many gap coverage contracts refund the unused portion when the loan is paid off early. Send a written request with your payoff date.
Will the refund come to me?
If the loan is still open, the refund usually goes to your lender and reduces your balance. If the loan is paid off, it usually comes to you.
